Optimizing the Photizo: The New Flexible LED Pad

I was very excited to hear about the new Photizo Flexible LED Pad, and grabbed it as soon as I could.  I use the Photizo handheld device daily for my elderly dogs and for me when I need it and was keen to try this pad for more coverage and perhaps ease of use.  As our dogs get older, well and we get older the bits that need help get more widespread!

Within hours of its arrival after giving it a whirl on Seren my elderly springer spaniel I was using it for myself when after months of marathon training I tripped on a dog walk and I suspect I have torn the top of one of my hamstrings!
The pad comes with a booklet to explain how to use it however, it does explain adequately why or how to choose between the different settings.
It is comprehensive in talking about what the settings are and about the difference between chronic and acute injuries as well as cautions but I was disappointed to see that a real explanation of why you would use wavelengths of 650nm over ALL was not explained, let alone the benefits of the different energies.  The frequency uses based on their effect on the brain was explained but I was left with a sense of not truly understanding how to utilise this new bit of kit.

So here we are I’ve done the digging to find out how to truly optimize this tech. Whether you are treating a senior dog with aches and pains or using it on your own hamstrings, here is the science-backed way to get results.

The Science: Why This Actually Works
I delve into this in my blog post about the handheld device which you can read here.  I find red light therapy fascinating, this light interacts with the body on a cellular level. It’s not just "warm light"; it actually stimulates the mitochondria to produce up to 250 times more ATP—that’s the fuel your cells need to repair themselves. It even helps regulate DNA and RNA synthesis, which basically tells the body to follow the correct healing path rather than just rushing to create messy scar tissue. Because it opens up the blood and lymph vessels, it’s brilliant for flushing out waste and getting oxygen exactly where it needs to go. It’s why I think my hamstring felt so much better so quickly; the light was essentially giving my body the "green light" to speed up the natural recovery process by 30-40%.

So let’s get stared on using the flexible pad - there is a choice of wavelength 650nm or ALL (660nm and 850nm) , and four different power settings (P1-P4) as well as the different frequencies. Whether you are using this on a senior dog or using it on your own aching back, understanding the "Optical Window" of the body is key to getting results.

1. The Dual Wavelength Strategy: 650nm vs. 850nm
The Photizo pad uses a "stacked" approach, emitting both wavelengths simultaneously or just the 660nm on its own. Here is what the science says each one is doing:
  • 650nm (Visible Red Light): This wavelength is absorbed primarily by the skin and superficial tissue. Research shows it is highly effective for collagen production, wound healing, and skin inflammation. It targets the Cytochrome C Oxidase (CCO) in the mitochondria of surface cells.
  • 850nm (Near-Infrared Light/NIR): This is the "heavy lifter" for deep tissue. NIR light is invisible to the human eye and falls within the "optical window"—a range where light can penetrate bone, muscle, and tendons. It is the gold standard for joint pain, muscle recovery, and deep-seated inflammation.
The Optimization Tip: Because the pad uses both, you don't have to choose. However, for deep issues (like a hip or lower back), ensure the pad is in direct contact with the skin. Every millimeter of gap between the LEDs and the skin results in significant "scatter" and loss of energy.

2. Decoding the Powers (P1 to P4)
The Photizo uses different power densities (irradiance) and time cycles. In the world of Photobiomodulation, there is a concept called Biphasic Dose Response.
  • Too little light: No effect.
  • The "Sweet Spot": Optimal healing.
  • Too much light: Can actually inhibit healing (the "quenching" effect).
How to choose your setting based on research:
  • P1 (Lower Power / 15 Mins): Best for acute injuries or very sensitive areas. If you have a fresh bruise or a "hot" inflamed joint, lower intensity for a shorter duration prevents over-stimulating the tissue.
  • P2 & P3 (Medium Power / 30-34 Mins): The "Maintenance" zone. Ideal for chronic issues like arthritis or slow-healing skin conditions.
  • P4 (High Power / 60 Mins): This delivers a high "Joule" count (energy). Scientific literature suggests higher doses are required for deep tissue (like the spine or deep muscle groups) because so much energy is lost as the light travels through the skin and fat layers.
When I tore my hamstring training for the Manchester Marathon, I used the P4 for up to 45 minutes daily. The pain relief was massive—I went from being unable to walk on Saturday to walking comfortably by Sunday. These powers also correspond to different temperatures so keep that in mind when using the pad on your dog - for me sometimes 30-45 mins at P4 was enough as the heat became uncomfortable so I dropped it to P3 for the remaining time.

3. Frequency of Use: The "Less is More" Myth
A common mistake is using the pad once and waiting a week. One of the biggest questions I get about the Photizo is, "How often should I be doing this?".  Research by Dr. Michael Hamblin, a lead researcher at Harvard in PBM, suggests that consistency is more important than a single long session.  And The manual is actually quite specific about finding that "sweet spot" to ensure you don't over-stimulate the tissue.
  • For Acute (New) Injuries: Start by treating the painful area once daily for 10 days.
    • If the pain is really intense, you can treat twice a day for the first 2–3 days, but then go back to the once-daily routine.
    • If things still feel a bit "off" after the first 10 days, you can move to a maintenance schedule of 2–3 times a week.
    • Pro Tip: Always include muscle spasms or "trigger points" in the treatment area for the best results.
  • For Chronic or Overuse Issues:
    • Think of this as a "reset" for the body. Start with once daily for 5–7 days.
    • After that first week, drop down to 2–3 times a week for about three weeks.
    • If you’re still noticing some discomfort after that, you can revert to a "top-up" treatment once a week to keep things moving.
My Take: Whether it's my marathon recovery or Seren's senior aches, consistency is much more important than doing one massive session. Follow the cycle, give the cells time to react, and you’ll see the best results.

4. Decoding the Frequencies: 10Hz, 40Hz, and "H" Mode
One of the most confusing parts of the Photizo is the frequency button. While "Continuous Mode" is the default for pure energy delivery, the pulses have specific uses:
  • 10Hz (Alpha Wave): Similar to brain waves associated with meditation. It helps improve coordination and enhance a sense of relaxation.
  • 40Hz (Gamma Entrainment): A frequency close to human brain waves that can improve the overall treatment effect through "brain wave entrainment".
  • 05Hz "H" (Breathing Mode): This employs a slow, steady pattern that simulates natural breathing. I’ve found this is the best setting for "stressy" dogs and have been using it for Seren, who is blind and deaf, settles much better when I use this mode while she’s sleeping.
5. Handheld vs. Flexible Pad: Which is best?
As a seller of both, I’ve realized it isn't "one size fits all."
  • The Flexible Pad: Best for chronic conditions (like arthritis) where the animal is happy to rest and relax for 15–60 minutes or for the human for large non-specific areas needing therapy.
  • The Handheld (Vetcare): Ideal for younger, "busy" dogs. Because the Vetcare runs in 31-second bursts, you can treat specific spots quickly before they move away. Or for me for target aches and pains and facial skincare.

Summary Checklist for Optimization
  1. Direct Skin Contact: Don't wear clothes under the pad. NIR light is easily blocked by fabric fibre or thick fur can scatter the light. For deep issues (like a hip or lower back), ensure the pad is flush against the skin.
  2. Hydrate: PBM works by affecting the water molecules around the mitochondria. Being well-hydrated increases the effectiveness of the light.
  3. The "Deep" Rule: If you are treating a deep joint, use P3 or P4. If you are treating a skin rash or a surface scrape, use P1 or P2. - remember our dogs are not quite as bulky as we are and can get hot under that hair.
A Quick Word on Safety (The "Must-Knows")
I did want to mention a few cautions I found in the digging I've done, because the instructions can be a bit technical. First, while this light is non-ionizing and totally different from harmful UV rays, you should never use it directly over any known or suspected cancerous masses. Also, if you’re using those pulsing 10Hz or 40Hz modes I mentioned, just be careful not to look directly into the beam—especially if you or your pet are prone to seizures. One big thing for our pets: because the pad is so good at relieving pain, they might suddenly feel like they can run a marathon. If they have a diagnosed injury, make sure they don't overdo it just because the light has made them feel "fixed" in the moment! And lastly, keep it dry—only use it on clean, dry skin to keep the tech inside safe.

My Comprehensive Approach
I believe in a holistic "stack." After using the Photizo pad, I apply targeted essential oils. The light therapy increases blood flow and vessel diameter, which may help the body absorb topical treatments more effectively - learn more about essential oils in my FREE eBook.
