Frankincense For Pets

Frankincense is called the King of Essential Oils and for good reason - it has a massive breadth of benefits.

It is one of the most important and well-used oils in the animal world and it has been used with every species and in every way imaginable and is incredibly well safe and well tolerated as well as being versatile and effective.  One time I really discovered it’s amazing benefits was running out of metacam at 3am (had just arrived home from work) and was giving the bedtime dose to bunny Doris who had hurt her hip - to my dread I discovered that the metacam had run out - panicked as rabbits can go into stasis at the drop of a hat especially when they are uncomfortable- I wondered what else to use - I was pretty new to oils and hadn’t used them on bunnies at the time but I grabbed the frankincense and made up a suitable dilution and applied it.  To my surprise on waking not only was Doris mobilising she was moving much better than she had for days and certainly much better than when I was using the metacam.

Frankincense is suitable for a whole range of different conditions from supporting the nervous system to the musculoskeletal system, the immune system, cellular health.   It's considered a life force oil and it's also a wonderful oil to use at times of transition as well for both animal and carer. Frankincense is also safe to be used with newborns of every species.  Interestingly, Frankincense also magnifies and enhances the effects of other essential oils making the whole blend greater than the sum of its parts,

Now for a really fantastic choice of oil look no further than doTERRA Premium Frankincense essential oil which can be used aromatically, topically or internally unlike many other alternatives giving you the full spectrum of it’s amazing benefits.

The oil is a proprietary blend of resins from four species of Boswellia trees, Boswellia carterii, Boswellia sacra, Boswellia papyrifera, and Boswellia frereana. Boswellia trees have been celebrated for centuries. The Babylonians and Assyrians would burn the tree resin in religious ceremonies and for contemplative meditation. The ancient Egyptians used it in perfumes and salves for soothing skin. Oil from the resin has long been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese health practices.

According to pre-clinical research, Frankincense essential oil may promote healthy cellular function when taken internally.* Experimental research suggests internal use of Frankincense, high in α-pinene, may provide soothing effects to the body. * Because of the oil’s significant level of α-pinene, preclinical research also indicates Frankincense may help maintain healthy skin structure.*

There are several different ways to use this fantastic oil with our pets.  Use of this oil internally has a plethora of benefits for your pet’s body at a cellular level, and helps to promote emotional stability - now it can be off putting for some pets not liking the taste so start very dilute and work up and consider hiding in a odourous food -eg sardines for dogs and cats.

Skin Soothing: The chemical properties of Frankincense oil provide comfort and support to skin either alone or in combination with other great skin oils such as lavender, myrrh, helichrsym or copaiba to name just a couple.
Incorporating this into massage is a nice calming option for your pet as well as supporting cellular health and joints and bones.  Dilute with fractionated coconut oil appropriately.

Apply at the base of the brain and diffuse in combination with other emotionally supportive oils to create a calm environment or in a roller and apply to the chest and along the spine for when out and about and to support focus.

Cardiovascular support - add to food and apply diluted over heart area.
For cognitive support in senior pets or when they need more help to relax then internally mixed in with food or a drop on gums can be very supportive especially if in a convulsive state.
Mobility Support can be used as for cognitive support and applied topically appropriately diluted.
