Dogs & Poorly Tummies

I hate it when my dogs are poorly, you just wish you could explain and help them more.  There is a gastric bug going around in doggies at the moment in the UK Rowan had it after xmas and was vomiting loads - so I thought I would share about what I used to support him and some digestive tips in general.

Day 1 he was vomiting and not keeping anything down and I was going to take him to the vets but after diffusing some ZenGest and applying peppermint to his tummy he settled and was drinking it is important to note that this obviously does not take the place of veterinary advice but something you can do whilst waiting to get there etc.  Gut problems can quickly turn bad so getting the advice of a professional is crucial in my case. I am a doctor and so I knew the signs that were what we call red flags.

If you live in a multi-dog household, maintaining good hand hygiene and other measures is crucial and using the tips here no other dogs got ill which was a relief with 6 dogs of which 2 are incontinent!

I’m a big fan of Terrazyme the digestive enzyme and I use it a lot with the dogs, I have a dog called Seren who is a food thief.  Nothing is safe, cupboards have locks on them but recently she figured out how to open the fridge!  This is where self selection falls down as Seren has no off switch it is completely behavioral, the girl loves her food, and not to do with any deficiency in something ….. As 500g of bread dough is not exactly healing - not kidding she ate that too!  Please don’t think I am not careful I am but she often finds a wayor lulls you into a false sense of security and then wham which is what happened with the dough incident….. I often quote that infamous line in Jurassic Park “clever girl” .  Anyway straight on I emptied a capsule of Terrazyme into a small amount of oat milk with a drop of Terrazyme and gave it to her to drink.  This definitely settled her tummy and it passed through relatively quickly with no incident!

I also like Tamer - after the fridge incident I quickly grabbed it and applied it to her sore tummy and it settled down and applied it regularly over the next 24 hours oh boy was her tummy gurgling as we went to bed but Tamer settled it.  You can of course make a blend with ZenGest which I do as well but as I had the Tamer roller (the kids blends are awesome for dogs) I just used that.  For ZenGest 1 to 2 drops in a 10ml roller topped up with fractionated coconut oil and applied to the tummy 2 to 4 times a day.  I also like to apply a bit of either to the chest to help with nausea too or diffuse.

Hope that helps - please remember to take the advice of your vet, I am merely sharing my own experiences and every pet is different.
